Most Small Shops Should Buy a Glowforge (and Honestly, About 20% Shouldn't)

Who Shouldn't Buy This (Honestly)

  • You're a metal fab shop. You'll be fighting the CO2's material limits every single day. Buy a fiber laser instead.
  • You need production volume. The Glowforge is a desktop tool, not a production line. It's not built for eight-hour continuous duty cycles or batch orders of hundreds of parts. If that's your pace, you need commercial-grade equipment with a service contract and, frankly, a budget for repairs.
  • Offline operation is a deal-breaker. The Glowforge relies on its software and a network connection. I won't claim it's maintenance-free or 100% reliable—no laser is—but if you need a machine that runs entirely offline in a remote space, this is the wrong pick.

If none of those apply, the entry-level CO2 laser is the no-brainer purchase I wish I'd made a year earlier. I'd recommend the Basic for modest office volume and the Plus if you want more speed and the pass-through slot for longer pieces. The honest answer for most small businesses is this: the best laser is the one that matches the materials you actually work with, at the volume you actually have. People think expensive machines produce better output. In reality, output quality comes from material, settings, and operator skill—the machine just has to fit the job. The Glowforge fits the jobs most small shops actually have. Buy for the workload you can name, skip the future-proofing bait, and if metal work ever shows up in volume, buy the fiber laser then.
