How I Rush-Proof Glowforge Orders: A 5-Step Checklist for Same-Day Turnarounds

Step 1: Confirm the Material & Design Compatibility

Most common mistake: assuming the Glowforge can handle any material sent your way.

The Glowforge Pro is a CO2 laser, meaning it excels on wood, acrylic, leather, and paper. But if a client sends a design meant for fiber laser (like deep metal engraving), you're wasting time. Check these three things first:

  • Material type: Is it compatible with a CO2 laser? (e.g., clear acrylic works, but some metalized plastics don't.)
  • File format: .SVG or .PDF preferred over .PNG or .JPEG (prevents resolution issues).
  • Stroke vs. fill: Is the design using strokes (which engrave as lines) or fills (which engrave as areas)? Misinterpreting this is my #1 time-waster.

So I tell the client it'll take 45 minutes—not 30—because the buffer covers material flaws or a misaligned bed.

Step 3: Use the Glowforge Dashboard for Setup—Not Guesswork

What This Checklist Doesn't Cover (And When to Say No)

  • If the material is thick hardwood (>¼") or requires deep engraving (>3mm), rush orders are risky. The CO2 laser cuts slower on thick material, and quality drops fast if you increase speed.
