Glowforge: CO2 Laser or Not? A Quality Inspector’s Verdict on the Pro, Basic, and Aura

That's the short answer. After four years of reviewing laser system specifications—comparing power ratings, tube types, and material compatibility across dozens of vendors—I can tell you the distinction matters more than most buyers realize.

If you’re searching for a CO2 laser plate-maker or a desktop unit for production engraving, the Glowforge Pro and Basic deliver genuine 40W and 45W CO2 laser tubes. The new Glowforge Aura Craft Laser™ cutting machine, however, uses a blue diode laser. That’s a fundamentally different technology, with different capabilities and limitations.

Let me walk through what that actually means for someone choosing between these models—and whether any of them fits what you’re trying to do.

What I Checked (And Why)

In my role, I review roughly 200+ unique product specifications annually. When our team evaluates laser engravers, we look at three things first: laser source type, power output, and wavelength compatibility with target materials.

For the Glowforge lineup, I verified each model’s specs against the manufacturer’s published data and cross-checked with independent lab tests available through industry forums. The short version:

Why This Differentiation Matters

CO2 lasers emit at a 10.6 micrometer wavelength. That wavelength is absorbed efficiently by organic materials—wood, acrylic, leather, paper, fabric. It’s why a CO2 laser can cut through 1/4-inch acrylic cleanly, or engrave detailed text on a wooden sign in one pass.

A blue diode laser emits at roughly 445 nanometers. This wavelength is absorbed differently. It works well on certain metals and dark-colored materials, but it struggles with clear acrylic and lighter woods. It’s also lower power, meaning slower cutting and shallower engraving on most materials.

If I remember correctly, the Aura is positioned as a craft-focused machine. It’s not designed for production runs of signage or custom parts. It’s for hobbyists making personalized gifts or small decorative items. That’s fine—but it’s not a replacement for a CO2 machine.

The Three Machines, Side by Side

Glowforge Pro: The Production Workhorse

This is the machine I’d pick if I were running a small business making custom signage, awards, or engraved products.

  • Max cut thickness: ~1/4-inch hardwood, ~1/4-inch acrylic (multiple passes for thicker)
  • Engrave speed: Up to 150 inches per second
  • Material bed: 19.5 x 11 inches with optional pass-through for longer materials

The Pro includes a built-in air filter and a stronger exhaust system, which matters if you’re working in a shared space or retail environment. I’ve seen small businesses pair this with a Glowforge store subscription and run it as a dedicated plate-maker for custom engraving jobs. It’s reliable enough for daily use, though the air-cooled CO2 tube does degrade over time—expect replacement around 8,000–10,000 hours.

Glowforge Basic: The One to Watch

The Basic is effectively the same machine with a slightly lower-power tube and fewer included accessories.

  • Laser: 40W CO2 air-cooled
  • Max cut thickness: ~1/4-inch hardwood, ~3/16-inch acrylic
  • Engrave speed: Up to 140 inches per second
  • Material bed: Same as Pro (19.5 x 11 inches)
  • Price (as of late 2024): ~$3,995 USD

The power difference is small. For most jobs, you won’t notice a practical difference. Where it matters: thicker acrylic and harder woods. If you’re cutting 1/4-inch acrylic regularly, the Pro will do it in one pass; the Basic may need two. I’d argue the Basic is actually the smarter buy for someone just starting out, because you can upgrade later without losing the initial investment.

Glowforge Aura: The Craft Companion

The Aura is not a CO2 laser. Full stop.

  • Laser: Blue diode (5–10W estimated)
  • Max cut thickness: Very limited—thin wood (1/8-inch or less), paper, fabric
  • Engrave speed: Slower than CO2 on most materials
  • Material bed: Smaller than Pro/Basic (exact dimensions unconfirmed)
  • Price: ~$1,995 USD (estimated launch price)

I should add that diode lasers are not inherently bad. They’re excellent for marking certain metals (engraving anodized aluminum, for instance) and for cutting thin materials where speed isn’t critical. But they are not suited for production work or for cutting clear acrylic. If you need a CO2 laser plate-maker for professional signage, the Aura isn’t it.

My Take: Which One Actually Makes Sense?

This is where the “prevention over cure” mindset comes in. I’ve seen too many buyers purchase the wrong machine because they didn’t check the laser type against their actual materials.

If you’re making custom wood signs, cutting acrylic displays, or producing engraved products for sale: buy the Glowforge Pro or Basic. The CO2 tube is the right tool. The Aura will frustrate you with slow speeds and limited cut depth.

If you’re a hobbyist making small crafts—cardstock, thin wood, leather keychains—and budget is your primary concern: the Aura works. But know what you’re giving up. You cannot cut acrylic. You cannot do production runs. And you will be slower than a CO2 machine.

Boundary Conditions (When Not to Buy a Glowforge)

I don’t want to pretend Glowforge is the answer for everyone. Here’s where I’d look elsewhere:

  • If you need real industrial throughput: A 45W CO2 desktop machine is not a replacement for a 100W+ industrial laser. You’ll hit throughput limits on larger runs.
  • If you’re cutting thick materials regularly: Glowforge’s air-cooled tubes lack the power and cooling of water-cooled industrial systems. For consistent 1/2-inch cuts, you need a different class of machine.
  • If your primary material is metal: You’re looking for a fiber laser, not CO2. Glowforge doesn’t offer one (yet). Search for CO2 laser Alpharetta or CO2 laser skin resurfacing San Bernardino, and you’ll find entirely different applications—medical and aesthetic, not manufacturing.
